Mainau - The flower island in Lake Constance
The island of Mainau is always worth a visit. This 45-hectare island – one of the most important destinations on Lake Constance – is an experience at every turn, offering impressive views and insights in every part of the park and constantly surprising visitors with something new. The varied tour of the flower island lets you forget the hustle and bustle of everyday life: the seasonal abundance of flowers, with around a million tulips, rhododendrons, fragrant roses, perennials and colourful dahlias, as well as the majestic grandeur of the 150-year-old arboretum with its sequoia trees, all contribute to this. Palm trees and citrus plants give the island a Mediterranean flair in summer, while the tropical butterfly house, where around 120 species of free-flying butterflies and moths flit about, and the subtropical palm house, which provides shelter for around 20 different species of palm trees, offer an exotic ambience – both ideal places to visit on cooler and rainy days. In the immediate vicinity of the palm trees, which are up to 15 metres high, are architectural highlights of the Baroque period: the Deutschordensschloss (Castle of the Teutonic Order), completed in 1746, and the Schlosskirche St. Marien (Castle Church of St. Mary).
